Tenpin Bowling Games You Can Play

Games To Play On A Bowling Alley

Bored of just bowling? There are a variety of games you can play instead of the traditional sport of ten-pin bowling. Here are some we used to play.

Nine Pin Tap
To play Nine Pin Tap, you need the ability to edit scores on the bowling alley. The rules of nine pin tap are simple. If you manage to knock over nine pins or more over two frames, it counts as a strike or spare (depending on whether you knocked over nine pins in one frame or two). These lead to ultra high scoring games, and eliminates the 5 pin syndrome.

8-1 Pin Tap
Similar to Nine Pin Tap, but you have to knock over an exact number between 1 and 8 on two frames. Not as popular as 9 pin tap as it's very difficult to score on automatic lanes.

Low Score - Bumpers
The object of the game is to get the lowest score possible with the bumpers up. Surprisingly hard!

Low Score - No Bumpers
You have to get the lowest score possible without the bumpers up. Sounds easy, but you need to knock over at least one pin per frame. A gutterball in the first bowl in the frame counts as a strike, and the second bowl in the frame counts as a spare.

These are fun, and can improve your game. The Tap games improve your consistancy, whereas low score can help you with picking up spares.

I had a chance to sand and refinish a one alley bowling lane in Sharon Springs, New York. They had a complete set of unpainted ten pins, duck pins and candlestick pins.

Unpainted original pins are extremely rare as they often split and made great firewood.

The lane required a pin boy to reset the pins and they had wooden bowling balls which were made from some extremely hard exotic wood.

The alley I worked on according to the Bowling Hall of Fame was possibly the only operating duck pin alley in New York State.

If you get a a chance try duck pins in Massachusetts. The ball is about the size of a soft ball and strikes are really hard.
